Hanoi, March 20 – 22nd 2023. Funded by the European Union, a three-day training course on Virus Detection on Tomatoes 🍅 was organised by the project “Technical Assistance for the ARISE+ Programme in Viet Nam” in collaboration with the Plant Protection Department (PPD), under Viet Nam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).
Supported by the project’s plant pathogens detection expert, about 15 trainees, who are PPD’s plant quarantine and protection officers, were provided with standard diagnostic methods for virus detection on tomatoes in the laboratory and the field. On the first day, PPD’s officers paid a visit to a tomato field in Hai Duong to diagnose symptom-based viral diseases and collect symptomatic samples for laboratory work. For the rest of the training, under the project expert’s instructions, they attended both theoretical and practical training sessions and group discussion, thereby obtaining useful insights into identification of plant diseases and protocol development for diagnosis of targeted viruses.
The joint activity is aimed to assist PPD/MARD in developing standardised diagnostic methods for plant quarantine and defining appropriate production management measures, contributing to boosting Viet Nam’s fresh fruit and vegetables exports to Europe.

a group of 15 PPD officers go on a field trip to Hai Duong to diagnose symptom-based viral diseases and collect symptomatic samples for lab work

For the rest of the course, trainees attend intensive training sessions, both theoretical and practical,
to grasp the standard methods for identification of some viral diseases on tomatoes

Trainees divided into small groups and instructed to utilise the ELISA method for diagnosing viral plant diseases on tomatoes

Trainees actively join in group discussion and exchange experiment results based on sample observations and diagnostic analysis of viral pathogens of tomatoes
(findings of viral diseases of tomatoes through the training summarised on the board)
